Imagine if you could immediately release the anger or frustration you experience when someone cuts you off in traffic. It is one moment in time, but it seems to take over your thoughts and emotions during the drive to work and sometimes sets the tone for the entire day. Occasionally, the incident will even come up days or weeks later when someone does something similar, you cross the same spot, or someone else mentions the jerk that tried to cut them off on the way to work.
Consider the difference it would make if that moment in time became simply a fact without frustration, anger, or any emotion. If you stated what happened as “A guy in a red sports car pulled in front of me at the corner of Main and Broadway on Tuesday morning” instead of giving a long story with lots of adjectives and emotions, it would lose its punch.
The emotion creates an energetic connection with the situation which is perpetuated and strengthened by the retelling of the story. The stronger the energetic ties become, the more challenging it is to release the situation and the more it affects you.
Without the emotion, the energy of the situation dissipates and you would soon turn your attention and energy toward other happenings of the day. You would not be inclined to complain to your co-workers about the jerk on the highway or bring up the situation with your significant other later that day.
Considering the situation simply a fact would completely change your day.
