I imagine there were times I cried as a baby when I should have been quiet so not to disturb a church sermon, someone resting, or for some other reason. I recall when I was young, and struggling to learn how to tie my shoes, my mother told me that I should be able to tie my own shoes by now. As I grew older and became disenchanted with organized religion, my mother told me that I should go to church on a regular basis regardless of my own beliefs. When I was contemplating my career, my brother suggested that I should pursue a career in computers. And, like most of us, I am inundated on a near daily basis with some political party telling me that I should be outraged over one thing or another.
The “shoulds” in one’s life are never ending. “Shoulds” come from parents, teachers, friends, siblings, spouses/partners, children, bosses, co-workers, church members, political parties, neighbors, and even strangers. If you are like most people, you have experienced having someone tell you what you should be doing, thinking, and believing almost daily since birth.
Even if you try to conform, you most certainly will fail to conform to each and every “should” thrown your way. Ultimately, you have a choice to make. You can feel the pressure to conform and feel guilty when you don’t meet expectations or you can choose to stand strong in your own power and make the decisions you want for your life.
Imagine if . . . you were no longer subjected to the concept of “should.” In this magical world, you are no longer overwhelmed by all those things you should be doing, thinking, and believing. You are free! Guilt is a thing of the past. You can become anyone you want to be!
What are you waiting for? Explore different activities, read different types of books, and find time to just contemplate what excites and motivates you. Once you discover who you are then there are no more excuses, no more guilt, and no more apologies. Freedom awaits you.
